Popular American sitcom The Big Bang Theory will dedicate an entire episode to bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. “The bitcoin entanglement” – episode 9 of season 11 – is scheduled to air on November 30.
In “The bitcoin entanglement”, Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj find a laptop belonging to Penny’s old boyfriend, Zack, according to the Big Bang Theory Wikia page. Supposedly, the laptop has bitcoin on its hard drive.
“The bitcoin entanglement” announcement was met with mixed reactions from the bitcoin community. Some members believe the episode will give the cryptocurrency well-deserved mainstream exposure, while others fear that bitcoin could be “dumbed down” and presented as a dodgy, unsecure asset.
Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, The Big Bang Theory premiered on CBS on September 24, 2007. The long-running sitcom is CBS’s highest rating show among the 18–49 demographic, with 17 million viewers per episode, on average.
Many TV shows have mentioned bitcoin in passing over the last couple of years, although not as a central storyline for an entire episode.
The Simpsons used bitcoin references as early as 2013, in an episode called “Yellow Subterfuge”.
The Good Wife, Person of Interest, Jeopardy, Almost Human, Parks and Recreation, House of Cards, Family Guy, Supernatural, and Silicon Valley have also mentioned bitcoin at various points.
